FREON RECOVERY INFORMATION The Clean Air Act of 1990 requires the recapture, recycling and safe disposal of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers as coolant. Under the Act, no one may accept an item containing CFCs and/or HCFCs for recycling or disposal unless the Freon contained within it is properly removed and the owner/hauler/appliance company can show proof of proper removal. It is also unlawful for any person to knowingly release or vent CFCs or HCFCs into the air. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires certification for all technicians removing Freon as of November 14, 1994. For more information, call the EPA Stratospheric Protection Hotline at 800-296-1996.
