Cell Phone Recycling

In November 2003, The FCC ruled that cellular phone numbers can be retained, even if carriers are switched.  According to an article in Recycling Today, this Act could lead to an estimated 100 million cellular phones being retired this year alone.   It is estimated that Cell Phone Recycling Programs collect less than 1% of the discarded phones, annually.

Cellular phones release harmful chemicals such as cadmium and arsenic and should be disposed of properly.  Delaware County looking to be responsible environmental stewards saw there was a need to supply outlets to our residents so they could recycle their outdated and unwanted cell phones.  We started out by initiating a Pilot Program to collect and recycle old cell phones.  From the overwhelming response we received, it became obvious that we needed to make this a permanent program.

Delaware County was a 2004 and most recently a 2007 Pennsylvania Waste Watcher Award Recipient as a result of this extremely successful program.

The smaller phones we receive that are in good condition are used in Domestic Abuse Programs with the remaining phones being dismantled and recycled.

At various locations throughout Delaware County, you’ll see our flyer along with our Blue Cell Phone Recycling Container.   Please bring only cell phones and the power cord that plugs into the wall to one of our convenient locations.  Since these phones are reprogrammed to only dial 911, books, boxes, etc. should not be brought to these locations.  However, feel free to recycle as much of this material as possible in your local curbside recycling program.
