Natural Resource Protection
The Planning Department collaborates with many state and local agencies to preserve Delaware County’s unique natural resources. Staff are available to assist with inquiries regarding the following resources:
Natural Heritage Inventory
The new Delaware County Natural Heritage Inventory (2011) has replaced the Delaware County Natural Areas Inventory (1992). Completed by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the NHI is designed to inform residents and local decision makers about the unique plants, animals, and habitats that are found throughout Delaware County. The NHI is a valuable tool that can be used when planning for the future of the County’s communities or for making local land use decisions. Additional information about County Natural Heritage Inventories can be found at: http://www.naturalheritage.state.pa.u

Wetland Maps
The Planning Department has a collection of National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) maps for those interested in viewing wetlands as delineated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Fish and Wildlife Service also provides the Wetlands Mapper tool that offers digital wetland mapping data to help users with informative decision support tools.
Floodplain Maps
Flooding is an issue that affects all of Delaware County’s municipalities. Staff regularly receive inquiries to view the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodplain maps that were adopted in 2009. These maps can be viewed at the DCPD office and are also available through FEMA’s Map Service Center. This online tool allows a user to access FEMA floodplain maps by entering the street address for the desired location.
Soil Survey
The Planning Department can assist with inquiries about the soils that are found throughout the County’s municipalities. This information is accessible through the Department’s copy of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Soil Survey: Chester and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania (1963). The USDA’s National Resources Conservation Service also hosts its Web Soil Survey online.
