Delaware County Council Educates Residents
About Drug-resistant Staph Infections (MRSA)
Delaware County Council and its Department of Intercommunity Health Coordination are following five pathways to provide information and guidance related to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureaus (MRSA) to the community in the aftermath of reports of suspected cases of the infection in local schools. The Department of Intercommunity Health is conducting the outreach program to ensure that residents are properly informed about the nature of this type of infection and to encourage that any increase in incidents be properly reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
While there has been increased awareness about Community-Associated MRSA in recent months, these recent cases have brought about a heightened concern regarding a MRSA staph infection by the general public. The best prevention against MRSA is good personal hygiene. A person who suspects having MRSA should immediately contact a physician or seek professional medical help because accurate diagnosis can only be confirmed by a medical test.
The pathways for outreach are being conducted through the Delaware County Intermediate Unit to reach school officials and parents; the Delaware County Department of Human Services; the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA); the local municipal health officers; and the Delaware County Medical Society.
Because of these recent concerns about MRSA infections, further information is being provided through the following links:
