    • SCA: Luck is Not a Strategy for Success Improving Onsite Response to Sudden Cardiac Arrest Despite over a billion dollars being spent on CPR/AED training and materials for members of the general public, EMS professionals report that hardly ever are average citizens providing initial care and life support prior to the arrival of EMS. Even more disheartening, frequently an available AED is not well maintained and/or rarely is it utilized except by EMS, medical or public safety professionals who happen to be there. Consequently, the out of hospital survival rate from SCA has only improved minimally over the past 40 years. Bluntly, without an onsite response (i.e., immediate CPR and the application of an available AED) before EMS arrives, there is rarely – if ever – an SCA survivor. The now six year old SCA Response Program developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 300 of its staffed facilities has achieved a remarkable SCA survival rate of 75% and a striking 100% response (mostly by "lay responders" to a documented 11 worksite SCA events. In this presentation the Behavioral Science approach – the "secret sauce" responsible for this dramatic success – will be shared and discussed. (1.5 hour presentation)
