Special Events
The Department of Special Events under the direction of Marc Manfre, presents The Delaware County Summer Festival, a nine week season of the stage performances and visual arts. Special arrangements are in place for the infirm and handicapped. Over 150,000 people attend during the summer. All performers expenses are raised by the department from the private sector. This ensures that the free admission policy makes it possible for everyone to attend. The Special Events Department administers the Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County, Inc. with a Board of Directors appointed by County Council. The fund is for the sole benefit of children of police and firefighters who die in the line of duty. Since 1977 the fund has awarded over $270,000 in scholarship grants to 22 students. There are presently 2 students enrolled and 7 more eligible. The department also coordinates a volunteer committee for the presentation of the All-Star High School football game (Hero Bowl), which is a fund raiser for the scholarship fund. Since it began in 1981, the game has raised over $250,000 for the fund. In collaboration with The Philadelphia Suburban Water Company the Annual Run for Heroes occurs during the fall which also benefits the Hero Scholarship Fund. The Festival of Lights for Peace in Rose Tree Park is a joint enterprise with the Department of Parks & Recreation. It is a display of over 80 trees decorated with brightly colored lights and other seasonal decorations. The festival is a four week event and all expenses are raised through contributions from the public. The department presents a Holiday Songfest during December in the Delaware County Government Center lobby. About 25 County school choruses and bands take part and give great joy to County employees, parents and visitors. The Department of Special Events may is located in the Leedom House at Rose Tree Park and may be reached at 610-565-7410. |
