Delaware County Juror Appreciation Day

Jury Appreciation - Delaware County joins the State in acknowledging the important role that our citizens play in participating as jurors in our justice system.  We want to recognize the dedicated service and educate the public about the ongoing need jurors play in the judicial process.

Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille issued the following statement in appreciation of citizens who have served on juries throughout the Commonwealth during the past year.

This week, May 16-21, has been designated "Juror Appreciation Week" by the Pennsylvania Senate. In praising those who have performed public service as jurors, Chief Justice Castille said in his statement:

"One of the most fundamental rights of the American people is the right to a jury trial in criminal and civil cases. To ensure that right, the people themselves must be willing to play a vital role in the justice system. They must occasionally be willing to set aside personal business and respond to the call to serve.

"Historically, the American colonists wrested the power of trial by jury from the king of England by revolution, that right having been denied them through bitterly hated British laws known as the Navigation Acts. The Declaration of Independence denounced the king 'for depriving us in many cases of the benefits of trial by jury.'

"Following the American Revolution, the people of this new nation asserted their right to be free and self-governing. The right to a jury trial was written into Article Three of the Constitution in 1787. The same right was reasserted in the Bill of Rights in the Sixth and Seventh Amendments in 1791.

"Those rights are built into our history and remain an important part of our heritage. That is why this week we honor those Pennsylvania citizens who, by personal sacrifice, served as jurors during the past year and have kept faith with the founders of our nation and helped to keep the principles of Democracy alive. We encourage all citizens to do the same."

Jury Wheel

Jurors names were drawn using the Jury Wheel.  The wheel, used for over half a century to select jurors in Delaware County, was replaced by computers in December, 1978.  Shown left to right are; Marianne Grace, Executive Director; John Whelan, Chairman of County Council; Nancy Alkins, Jury Administrator; juror Janet Lynch, from Springfield; juror Rebecca Hynek, from Garnet Valley; and Judge George Pagano.

The Jury Administration of Delaware County Court Administrator's Office under the supervision of Gerald C. Montella, Esquire in cooperation with the Media Business Authority celebrated Juror Appreciation Week on Monday, May 16, 2011.  The Media Business Authority's efforts were coordinated by its Executive Director, Zubair Khan.  Jury Administrator, Nancy Alkins worked closely with Zubair and the local merchants for this annual celebration.  The jury office staff members, Jean O'Neill, Nicole Venini, Chrissy Kroh and Courtney Stevenson were busy collecting the gifts and donations from the various stores and banks.  The staff worked very hard to make the day extra special for the jurors.  The jurors were provided with breakfast items along with coffee and tea provided by the Court Administrator's Office and other drinks donated by Wawa.  They were also thanked for their service by the Honorable George A. Pagano, as Jury Liaison Judge on behalf of President Judge Joseph P. Cronin, Jr. and the Board of Judges.  The jurors were also greeted by County Council Chairman John J. Whelan, Delaware County's Executive Director Marianne Grace and the Jury Commissioners, Lillian Griffin and Dorothy Gallagher.  The juror lounge was tastefully decorated in a patriotic theme.  In addition to the raffle prizes, each juror went home with an American flag.
